Are there any risks associated with getting facial fillers?
Answer:
I believe that facial fillers are one of the safest procedures performed to treat the signs of aging. There are basically two categories of FDA-approved fillers used in the United States. The more popular of the two hyaluronic acids, include names such as Restylane, Perlane, and Juvederm. These are basically sugar-like molecules that are very safe for use the body. The second group is made of Radiesse, which is a calcium-based filler. This filler is also very safe. The unsafe fillers are the silicone and biopolymer-based fillers that are injected by non-professionals. These are very dangerous and can have disastrous and life long consequences. As safe as they are, there are some possible complications that can occur with fillers. For example, there can be some bruising at the injection site. This is usually mild and resolves in several days. Occasionally, there can be some lumpiness where the filler was placed. This can always be massaged and the lumpiness resolves. There is a risk that the herpes virus may be activated when the injection is placed near the lips. This is a rare occurrence and can be treated with anti-viral medication. Finally, there is a small risk that the patient may have an infection or an inflammatory reaction. This may occur soon after the injection or even months later. I conclusion, all procedures have risks, but I believe that fillers are very safe.
