What is the difference between «open» and «closed» rhinoplasty?

Many patients are not sure of the difference between an » open » and » closed » rhinoplasty.

Open rhinoplasty refers to a technique where the surgeon makes an incision in the columella at the base of the nose. This incision becomes invisible once it heals. I use the open approach for most revision rhinoplasties and for primary rhinoplasties that require complex tip work.

Closed rhinoplasty refers to a technique where the incisions are all inside the nose. I use this technique for most primary rhinoplasties. The advantage to this technique is that there is less swelling during the healing phase.

Both are great techniques and I believe that each one can provide an excellent result when properly done.
